How To
How do I mix this product?
Always read and follow all product label directions and precautions appearing on or included with the container, bag and or packaging. Always look on the label for the types of plants or sites where pesticide may be used, pests targeted by the pesticide, the rate how much to use, the how and when to apply. If required protective clothing and equipment, read and view listed signal word defining short-term toxicity to people (DANGER, WARNING, or CAUTION), Always read Precautionary statements defining hazards to people, domestic animals, or the environment, before use read and understand any emergency and first aid measures to take if needed, read how to properly store and dispose of the pesticide and empty containers and again please read the complete product label.
How do I know I applied enough lawn fertilizer and what is its benefit?
Lawn Grass needs nutrients. What kind? Basically the same as the rest of your plants, but not exactly the same. Lawn Fertilizers are applied to lawn grass to provide supplemental nutrients that will help produce a fair amount of top growth, but not at the loss of root growth. A good root system is the key to a healthy lawn. Lawn Grass has a primary need for nitrogen. Other plants are much more complex and have greater nutrient demands. The Application Rates for lawn fertilizers are generally very low. A 16lb. bag can cover up to 5,000 square feet. That’s a large area. And at first it will not seem like you put enough down to do any good. But always read the label and use the rates listed on the bag and make it cover the area of square feet list.

General
On your fertilizer bag, what does the three numbers (or the NPK) listed on fertilizers mean?
These numbers (ex. 4-10-3) stand for the percent of Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potassium (Potash) in that order. The N the first number. That is the percentage of Nitrogen in the bag which gives plants the nutrients to grow quickly, produce more plant leaves, and create a darker color of green. The second number, or P is the percentage of phosphate which gives plants the nutrients to form stronger roots and to mature which and helps flowering plants to flower earlier and promote more flowers. The third number, or K is the percentage of potassium in the bag which promotes healthy roots systems and helps the plants resist disease. Potassium also works in combination with the phosphorus in plant development.
What does RTS mean and how does it work?

All Ready to Spray’s are liquid products (not powders or granules) and work in a similar fashion.

Insect Control
I have noticed little black flies around my houseplants. What are they?
It sounds like you are describing Fungus gnats. Fungus gnats are common pests in houseplants throughout the U.S.
I have browsed your web site trying to find out what household pest I have. To me, the pest looks to be fruit flies in my houseplants but, the only thing that I could find that looks similar is Fungus gnats. Do Fungus gnats look like fruit flies?
Often times Fruit files are mistaken for Fungus gnats. Fungus gnats are black or dark brown flies and measure approximately a sixth of an inch. They look somewhat like tiny mosquitoes because when flying their legs are noticeably long and gangly. Fruit flies tend to be bigger than Fungus gnats. Fruit flies measure approximately an eighth of an inch and are plumper and easier to see than a small Fungus gnats.
I have small, green worms on my cabbage and cauliflower and they are eating holes in all the leaves. What are they and what can I use to save my vegetables?
These worms are most likely cabbage loopers. Apply Bonide’s Thuricide or Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew, as they both contain a bacteria that the worms (caterpillars) will ingest and then die. It works very well on worms and caterpillars without harming beneficial insects. These two products can be used up to day of harvest on cabbage and cauliflower.
There are several large, green worms eating the leaves of my tomato plants. What kind of worm is this and how do I get rid of it?
This large caterpillar is most likely a tomato hornworm. To control them, apply Bonide’s Thuricide or Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew, as they both contain a bacteria that the worms (caterpillars) will ingest and then die. It works very well on worms and caterpillars without harming beneficial insects. These two products can be used up to day of harvest on tomatoes.
My lawn is dying and in the dead areas, the grass mat pulls easily from the soil. What is the problem and how can I solve it before I lose my entire lawn?
Chances are you have grubs, the larvae stage of Japanese, or June Beetles. To make sure, you need to dig into the soil along the edge of the affected area. These worms are white with a brown head and will be curled up in the shape of the letter C. If you find them apply, Bonide Annual Grub Beater, Eight Insect Control, Systemic Insect Spray RTS or Insect and Grub, according to the label’s directions.
We have a problem with mosquitoes, not only flying around, but in our shrubbery. Can I effectively control them?
Since mosquitoes are flying insects, it can be harder to control them. With timely pesticide applications, using Mosquito Beater Ready to Spray, Eight Insect Control Yard & Garden, or Malathion in the early morning or late afternoon in and around shrubs, lawns and other areas where mosquitoes congregate, control can be achieved. Look for areas that retain water and drain them, as this is where the mosquitoes breed.
Recently I planted some bedding plants in my flower garden and several days later noticed they were cut off at the ground, what caused this?
Cutworms are most likely the culprits. They feed on young plants and will eat through the stems causing the plants to lie down like they have been cut. Disease
What is a fungicide and what does it do?
Fungicides are a type of pesticide, a chemical compound, which prevents and/or controls diseases on plants.
What is the difference between a contact and systemic fungicide?
Contact fungicides remain on the outside of the plant and form a protective barrier against diseases that penetrate the tissue. Contacts will not have any effect on diseases that enter through the root system. Systemic fungicides enter inside the plant and travel throughout the plant's vascular system. They are both protective and curative before and after the disease has started. Any disease that enters from any point on the plant will be subject to the systemic fungicide, this includes any new plant growth. Both systemic and contact fungicides are often alternated to get the benefits of both types of fungicides.
I have a white powdery substance on my plants, what is it?
Most likely, the plant has powdery mildew. Contact your local lawn & garden center, nursery or cooperative extension for diagnoses. Spray with an appropriate fungicide that lists on the label the disease and the type of plant. Check out the following product labels for recommendations; Copper Fungicide, Liquid Infuse, Neem Oil, All Seasons Oil or Sulfur Plant Fungicide.
I applied a fungicide to my shrubs, trees, flowers and it rained the next day. Do I need to reapply?
You can, but you must wait the recommended reapplication interval (i.e. if the label states apply in 7 to 14 days then you should reapply in that amount of time).
I have insects as well as fungus on my plant. Can I mix an insecticide with the fungicide?
Please consider using products that are already formulated for both insect and disease control like All Seasons Oil, Bon-Neem, Citrus Fruit & Nut Orchard Spray, Dragoon Dust, Fruit Tree & Plant Guard, Fruit Tree Spray, Garden Dust, Neem Oil, Tomato & Vegetable 3 in 1, Rose Rx 3 in 1, Rose Shield or Rose Rx Systemic Drench, instead of mixing.
My plants have blight. What should I do?
Contact your local lawn & garden center, nursery or cooperative extension for help in properly diagnosing the type of blight you have. Next, select a fungicide that lists that type of blight with the plant variety you are applying the product to.
Which fungicide can I use to get rid of mushrooms in my lawn?
Mushrooms in lawns are a result of dead decaying wood in your lawn. Fungicides will not get rid of them. The only way to get rid of them is to get rid of the wood source.

What is the difference between natural and organic?
Natural insecticides can be chemical, mineral, or biological. The common goal of all three is to kill, repel, or otherwise interfere with the damaging behavior of pests. Natural products can generally be described as chemical compounds or substances produced by living organisms. There are no legal definitions, regulatory oversight, or production standards for products advertised as natural. Bonide uses the tan color identifier on select Bonide products.
An organic pesticide must be produced from materials on the National List of Allowed Synthetic Substances, or come from all-natural substances that are not prohibited. The National Organic Program is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and includes a set of national organic standards, a list of allowed and prohibited substances, and a regulatory oversight structure. More information is available on their website at http://www.ams.usda.gov/about-ams/programs-offices/national-organic-program

Bonide does not seek approval from OMRI because OMRI provides organic certifiers, growers, manufacturers, and suppliers an independent review of products intended for use in certified organic production, handling, and processing. Bonide's products are sold for Residential Use Only and are not meant for production, handling, and processing, with the exception of BurnOut.

Weed Control
What is the dilution rate for Chickweed, Clover & Oxalis Killer Concentrate?
There is a range of rates that the concentrate can be mixed at depending on how the product is going to be used. Generally, it's 1.28 fl. oz. in 1 gallon of water per 400 sq. ft.
Is it too hot or cold to use a weed control product?
All weed control products are influenced by environmental conditions such as, air temperature and humidity levels. Herbicides are most effective when applied to growing weed plants at 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. During periods of high heat and humidity, both the turf and the weeds are stressed and applying weed control products on any stressed plant can cause damage to turf as well as poor weed control (i.e., it may take much longer to see actual weed death). If you must use weed control products under these conditions, use them in the early evening when humidity and temperatures decline to help reduce injury potential. Likewise, cold temperatures will affect the rate of weed growth too and will affect the reaction of many weeds to weed control products. Generally speaking, it will take longer to see weed wilting or weed death when using weed control products in cooler weather.
With all the different types of weeds killers, how do I decide which one is right for my problem?
First, you should identify the weeds you are trying to control. Is the weed a grassy weed or broadleaf weed? Is it an annual or perennial? Does it appear in the spring, summer or fall? Answering these questions is important in deciding which weed control product to apply. The categories listed below detail the differences between herbicides:
Pre-emergent weed control products are applied to stop the weed seeds from germinating. Be aware that pre-emergent products will stop all seeds from germinating.
Post-emergent weed control products are applied to weeds that are already growing. Good leaf coverage is important.
Selective weed control products kills certain types of weeds without harming desirable plants.
Non-selective weed control products kills all types of plants.
Systemic herbicides are absorbed by the plant through the roots or leaves and spread throughout the plant.
I want to renovate my garden and install a new flowerbed. How can I do this and be able to plant in the same season?
We recommend using Bonide’s KleenUp Grass & Weed Killer. This is a non-selective systemic herbicide that will kill everything it is applied to and will allow you to plant in one week.
Weeds keep coming up through the cracks in my driveway and sidewalk. What can I use to kill the weeds that won’t harm or stain my driveway or sidewalk?
To kill these weeds, use a non-selective weed control product such as Bonide's KleenUp or Burnout.
It rained 24 hours after applying a weed killer to my lawn. Should I spray again?
No, you should not reapply the herbicide. Most herbicides will have been absorbed into the lawn by then. Wait a few weeks to see if the weeds are dying. If they are not showing signs of dying (i.e. turning yellow/brown, shriveling up) then reapply.

Lawns
It is spring and some of my neighbors are now mowing their lawns and bagging the clippings. They cut the grass short, but it seems to really greens up fast. Is this the best practice?
This is a common practice in the US in spring it is called a “cleanup mowing or just spring cleanup” What is done you remove the top third of the old grass and this allows the sun to hit the crown tops and soil, which warms up the soil and stimulates new growth. You can just drop your mower height down one notch and bag the cuttings. But if you do nothing and leave it alone, the grass will also will green up, but it takes more time. We do not recommend what some call “Scalp mowing”, This is tough on the grass and the mower will open the grass crowns too much, giving the weed seed an opportunity to sprout and grow right with the grass.
I have a weed that is all over my lawn and I called my garden center and they suggested I try and ID it, find out what it is before bringing it in. Where would I even start?
Without a professional or going to a Bonified expert center, you may at least be able to tell if it is a grassy weed or broadleaf weed and that will help with choosing what weed killer to use.
Grassy weeds are grasses other than the desired lawn grass. Examples would be; crabgrass, nutsedge, goose grass, and dallisgrass, to name a few. Grassy weeds have long, narrow leaves with veins running parallel to each other and do not have any flowers, and leaf shapes of all grassy weeds are similar among species.
Broadleaf weeds, simply put, are not grasses they are usually winter annuals and summer perennial weeds. Examples are; dandelions, henbit, clover, and chickweed. Broadleaf weeds usually have wider leaf blades than grassy weeds. Each leaf typically has a main vein that divides the leaf in half with a network of smaller veins that form a pattern.
I just moved into a new home and I want to start a lawn right now I have clumps of what looks like grass. Should I hire a professional or is it possible to do the project myself?
Growing a lawn can be as simple or as difficult as you make it. There are many factors that determine the amount of work necessary for a nice lawn. First find out, how large is your lawn or area of lawn, what is its current condition (you stated clumps and not much more.), do you want to plant a certain variety or type of grass, and what is the climate/zone in which you live? Most important what is your budget and time? So start by looking at other lawns in your area see what you would like for your new lawn to look like, next check your budget, assess your schedule and time restraints, and research all about lawn care on what you choose. After that, you should have an idea of whether or not you should call a professional or do it yourself.
When should I rake and aerate my lawn?
The best time is the first few weeks of spring in your area when the grass has been growing a while. By that time, you have mowed the lawn a few times and the grass crowns, root system and rhizomes are anchored securely.
My lawn has dollar spot. Is there a way to get rid of it without killing the lawn?
Dollar spot is an easily controlled on lawn grass because it is a fungus which a number of fungicides will control and will not kill your entire lawn. Our best recommendation would be Bonide Infuse which has systemic protection for preventing and curing. It can also be normal cultural practices, such as fertilizing, mowing and watering.
Just seeded my lawn and it is not growing evenly I have kept the area wet with a sprinkler since it was seeded. At first I turned it on for about three minutes, but now I leave it on for 7 to 10 minutes so the area stays wet all day.
It could be that the seed is being kept too wet or possible the seed has poor viability and not germinating. In any case you may have to seed again and try just keeping the area moist till even growth starts.
Can I put grass clippings on my vegetable garden after the grass has been sprayed with a weed killer? Will it hurt the garden veggies I grew or harm me if I eat it them? I sprayed our yard for dandelions and also said it had something in it that would kill other weeds as well.
If the spray was just 2,4-D or a derivative of it, no problem using the clippings after the second or third mowing a enough time will have passed. If it was another product like a combination product commonly used that may contain dicamba or some other herbicides, I would not advise using the clippings. Check what was in the product formulation, so a wait time for use could be suggested or call your local county cooperative extension.
Does the pH of your soil matter when choosing a lawn fertilizer?
Yes, soil pH is a main factor for the health of your lawn grass. Some soils in the US are naturally acidic. In other words it may be the grass is too acidic to grow to a nice looking lawn. Acidic soil inhibits the uptake of nutrients and nutrients will go unused. So you are not getting the most out of your fertilizer when applying. Use Bonide’s Turf Turbo to increase the pH of the soil.
What is the best time to water my lawn if it needs it?
To use less water the best time is early morning, you will water your lawn during the hours the lawn is naturally wet from dew in turn the lawn takes less watering but gets the water needed. Remember that having your grass wet for more than 12 hours in a 24-hour period during the hot summer months will increase the chances of lawn disease.
