A Perennial broadleaf. Known for its cordage before domestic cotton. Horizontal root stock likes to grow in moist areas. The stem is woody at the base, lacks hair, is reddish brown and grows 3-6’ tall. Leaves are opposite with smooth edges, oval in shape, 2-5” long, they are smooth on top and have downy white hairs on the bottom. Flowers are small greenish to white about ¼” in size. Flowers appear spring to summer. Dogbane does produce a white milky sap when plant is broken, like a milk weed. Dogbane is toxic to animals.
