Alder

Alder

European Alder is a quick-growing tree in the birch family. It is commonly found along stream banks, rivers, ponds, or other wetlands. The tree can reach 30-50 feet in height. It has a multi-stemmed trunk, smooth bark, leathery rounded leaves and a narrow, upright crown. In fall, it produces cone-like woody green to brown catkins and reproduces by seed. Because of its rapid growth rate, European Alder can become invasive in home lawns and gardens very quickly.
