Beggarticks

Beggarticks

Tall Beggar’s Tick is a woody annual that grows in moist woodlands, thickets, meadows, and marshes. It grows about 2-4 feet tall, branching occasionally. Ribbed and slightly hairy, its stems are light green, reddish green, or brown. It is recognized by compound, coarsely-toothed leaves that become smaller as they ascend the stems. The upper stems end in a single flower head on a long slender stalk. Unscented flowers bloom from late summer to fall. Florets are replaced by green to brown, oblong, flattened one-seeded seeds that feature pairs of slender barbed hooks that cling to fur and clothing for distribution. The root system is shallow and strongly branched.
