Box Elder

Box Elder

Box elder is a fast-growing, species of maple native to North America. The tree grows on flood plains and in areas with ample water supply. It can grow up to 33-82 feet tall with a trunk of less than 3 feet in diameter. Box elder often has several trunks and can form impenetrable thickets. Shoots are green, often with a waxy coating. Branches are smooth, somewhat brittle, and tend to retain a fresh green color. The bark is pale gray or light brown, scaly with deep, broad ridges. It has compound leaves that usually have 3-7 leaflets. Leaves have a translucent light green color that turns yellow in the fall. Small flowers appear in early spring. Prolific and fertile, box elder seeds are slender and long with an incurved wing that drops in autumn or may persist through winter.
