Cinquefoil, Rough

Cinquefoil, Rough

This plant is an annual, biennial, or short-lived perennial depending on the climate. It consists of a rosette of basal leaves, later developing into flower stalks that are about 1-2’ feet long. The basal leaves are trifoliate with long hairy petioles. Each leaflet is oval, serrated, slightly hairy, and they are about 2” long and 1” across. The flowering stalks are reddish in color, have long spreading hairs and alternate trifoliate leaves. The flowers are about ½” across, have 5 yellow petals and 5 triangular green sepals. They bloom sporadically during the summer for 1 to 2 months. The seeds are small, flat and dark brown. The root system consists of a shallow branching taproot. This plant resembles wild strawberry but no fruit develops after the flowers fall.
