Frenchweed

Frenchweed

Also known as Field Pennycress. Frenchweed is a winter or summer annual that germinates in either late summer/fall or spring. The young plants form a rosette of basal leaves, then an erect flowering stem. The basal leaves are light-green in color, hairless and oval to oblong in shape. The stems and foliage will emit an unpleasant odor when bruised. Flowering occurs between April and June. The white flowers are borne in dense racemes at the end of the flowering stem. As the racemes age, they tend to elongate and the resulting fruit is flat with wings and a distinctive notch at the apex of the seed pod. French-weed is a weed of nutrient-rich soil in cultivated areas, such as agricultural and nursery crops. It is most prevalent in the northwestern states, but does occur throughout the United States.
