Galinsoga

Galinsoga

Also known as Common Quickweed or Shaggy Soldier. This summer annual germinates from seed in early spring through midsummer. This plant can produce several generations in one-season, as the seeds have no dormancy period and can germinate upon contact with the soil. This plant is erect in growth-habit and heavily-branched when mature. It has broadly egg-shaped to triangular leaves, which are arranged opposite each other on the stem. The leaves are coarsely toothed on the margins with noticeable hairs and are pointed at the tip. Flowering occure from June to October. The flowers are small, but numerous, and occur at the end of the stem and from the leaf axil. The petal colors are predominantly white, but sometimes pink. Plants turn quickly black at the first frost and die. Galinsoga is predominantly in the eastern United States on fertile soil and is one of the toughest weeds to control in vegetable crops, landscape gardens, ornamental beds and nurseries.
