Goldenrod

Goldenrod

This tall, erect, leafy perennial can create large clusters of plants through it’s spreading root system. This plant reproduces by wind-dispersed seeds and underground stems. Newly emerged plants from seeds form a basal rosette of toothed leaves. The young rosettes soon produce erect, leafy, un-branched stems. The toothed leaves are alternate in arrangement on the stem and much longer than they are wide. The yellow flowers are produced from August through October in backward-curving clusters. Goldenrod is a weed of nursery crops and orchards. It is also prevalent on roadsides, meadows and ditches. It does very well in moist muck soils. It is less common on very wet or very dry sites. Primarily found in the eastern United States and west to the north-central states, then south to California.
