Hawkweed

Hawkweed

A perennial, broad-leafed plant, that is prostrate in growth habit. It grows in patches by stolons (above ground rooting stems) and rhizomes. It can also be found as a stand-alone basal rosette of leaves. The leaves, stems, stolons and flower stalks are hairy. Flowers of this plant can be yellow or orange, borne on nearly leafless stalks that reach 25cm to 90cm in height. Flowers occur primarily in June and early July, and occasionally through the summer. The flower heads resemble dandelion flowers, however smaller, and in clusters of 2 or more per flower stalk. The leaves are narrowly elliptic in shape and are covered with long hairs above and below. Hawkweed exudes a white sap when plant parts are broken. This plant is common in low-maintenance turfgrass, roadsides, meadows and abandoned fields where there is low-fertility and acidic conditions.
