Healall

Healall

This prostrate perennial spreads to form large patches, but can grow tall in unmowed areas. This plant has square stems and are hairy when young. As the plant ages the stems become smooth. The leaves are arranged opposite each other on the stem. They are ovate, slightly hairy to smooth, broadest at the base and taper to a rounded tip. Lower leaves are wider and more rounded at the base compared to the upper leaves. Flowers occur from June to September in dense spikes. The flower petals take the shape of a tube and are pale violet to deep purple in color. Plants remain green and persist year-round. This plant is primarily a weed of turfgrass areas that are consistently shady and moist. Healall is found throughout the United States, but is very common in the northeast.
