Hemp

Hemp

This fast-growing, flowering, summer annual herb is best known for its production of fibers used to make paper and assorted textiles. Hemp plants can exceed 20 feet in height. It is relatively pest-free. Due to the similar leaf-shape, it is often confused with marijuana. Although both plants are from the species cannibis, hemp contains virtually no THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. The leaves are palmately compound with serrated leaflets. The lower leaf pairs are opposite each other on the stem, while the upper leaf pairs are alternately arranged on the main plant stem of a mature plant. Hemp plants like well-drained, nutrient-rich soils. Reproduction is by seed.
