Hoary Cress

Hoary Cress

Also known as Whitetop, Hoary Cress is native to western Asia and eastern Europe. It is an invasive plant in North America. This perennial herb reproduces by seeds and horizontal creeping roots. The stem is erect to 18 inches, well-branched and covered with ash-colored soft hairs. The simple, mostly-toothed 2 inch long leaves are alternate in arrangement on the stem with blunt ends. The leaves located at the bottom of the plant are flat, lance-shaped to egg-shaped and are attached to the stem with a short stalk (petiole). On the upper part of the plant, the leaves are attached directly to the stem without a stalk (petiole) and are oblong with broad bases that clasp the stem. The individual flower stalks grow upward from multiple places on the stem to the same height. This gives the flower cluster a dome-look. The flower petals are white and about 3 to 5 mm long and occur from May to June.
