Ironweed

Ironweed

Ironweed is a native weed in the Aster family. There are many species that are found through most of the mid-west to the entire east coast. It got its name from the stout stems that can persist through the winter. This perennial grows from 2 to 8ft. tall and produces wide clusters of vibrant purple flowers from summer to frost. The leafs are lance shaped, 4 to 10in. long, and attach to the stem. Ironweed reproduces by rhizomes in all directions, usually 1ft. deep, to form large colonies. Once it is colonized it is difficult to eradicate. It prefers moist soil in open fields and full sun.
