Jewelweed

Jewel weed is an annual in the Balsaminacae or Touch-Me-Not family. It got its family name from the seed pods bursting and spreading seeds over several square yards when touched. The seed are also toxic to humans if ingested. Its stem juice is also purported to be an itch reliever for poison ivy and has been tested and proven to treat athlete’s foot. Ornamental jewelweed is on at least 3 state noxious weed lists. Jewel weed grows to be 4 to 5ft. tall with oval leafs of 1/2 in long. The flowers can be yellow, green, brown or orange. It is distributed across most of North America with the exception of the far southwest, Montana, Utah and Alaska. It prefers shade and moist soil.
