Jimsonweed

Jimsonweed

Jimsonweed is a poisonous bush in the Datura genus of the potato family and is known by many names such as, moonflower, devils trumpet, downy thorn apple, stinkweed and hells bells to name a few. All parts of Jimsonweed are poisonous to both humans and animals and can be fatal. Poisoning is more common in humans because of the attraction of children to the trumpet shaped flowers. Jimsonweed is on at least 2 state noxious weed lists. It is a weed of worldwide distribution and grows mainly in cultivated fields and pastures which is how it poisons livestock. Jimsonweed is an erect annual growing to 5ft. tall with large 2 to 5in. long white or purple flowers with a distinctive odor. Leafs are 3 to 8in. long and up to 6in. wide, coarsely serrated along the edges and emit an unpleasant odor when touched. It produces seed pods that are hard spiny capsules about 2in. in diameter that open to 4 parts.
