Kikuyugrass

Kikuyugrass

Kikuyugrass is predominantly on the west coast of California, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in the US. It is in the grass family and is related to fountain grass. It is on the Federal register of noxious weeds because of its aggressive nature, although some people plant it as a grass substitute or forage for livestock. It is very drought tolerant and establishes quickly so some southern California golf courses are trying to adapt it for their use. Kikuyugrass can reach a height of 18in. with the leafs 1 to 10in. by 1/8 to 1/4in, wide with pointed tips. Mowing promotes flowering in late spring and continues thru fall. The plant is readily spread by seed and small pieces moved on mowing or cultivating equipment.
