Knawel

Knawel

Knawel is also known as German Moss, German Knotgrass or German Knotweed. It is in the pink family and some species are annual, some perennial. The Perennial is found in Wisconsin to Michigan, then Connecticut to Massachusetts, then Northern Vermont to Quebec. The annual knawel is spread throughout this region and looks like grass when young so it easily establishes in lawns. The Perennial knawel looks very similar to phlox so it is sometimes cultivated by mistake. The plant forms prostrate mats of dense foliage. The leafs are less than 1/8in wide and 1in.long, thick and fleshy. The annuals have an inconspicuous green flower that is often overlooked. The perennial has white conspicuous flowers. Both varieties prefer different growing condition so they will rarely be seen together.
