Kochia

Kochia

Kochia is also known as fireweed, burningbush, mock cypress and summer cypress. Its distribution is from Montana to New Mexico, Arizona to Oregon and spreading. Kochia is on at least 3 states noxious weed lists. It is grown as a forage plant for its drought, insect and disease resistance. It is also grown as an ornamental for its bright red foliage in autumn. Kochia has become a serious drought resistant weed in the plains states. Kochia is an annual that reproduces by seed. The bushy plants grow 1 to 7ft. tall. The many leafs are hairy, 1 to 2in. long, narrow and pointed. Small green flowers produce seeds that are rough and flat. In the fall, when the plant is red, it often breaks off from the roots and tumbles to scatter its seeds.
