Lupine

Lupine

Lupine is a perennial species that is mostly found in sandy soils in the western and northeastern Great Plains. The plant ranges from a half inch to an inch tall with palmately (palm looking) compound leaves with 5 to 7 individual leaflets. The leaves are smooth without hair and have a margin running the length of the leaflet. The flowers of the plant tend to be white to pinkish, or are sometimes dark blue. The plant normally blooms from May until August, where after they develop a seed pod similar to a bean plant since it is in the legume family. The seeds range in color from yellowish-brown to black, that are smooth and flat. It should also be noted that the seeds are high in alkaloids that make them harmful to children and pets if ingested.
