Mustard, Black

Mustard, Black

Black Mustard is a 2-8 foot tall, lanky, plant with narrow stalks of yellow flowers. The annual weed grows in weedy meadows, thickets, vacant lots, fallow fields, and in areas along railroads and roadsides. The root system consists of a taproot. The lower leaves have short stiff hairs and feel bristly to the touch. The alternate leaves become smaller as they ascend the stems. The upper stems terminate in narrow stalks of yellow flowers that bloom during the summer months. Each flower is replaced by a slender seed pod with a distinctive beak containing dark brown or black seeds. Black mustard spreads by reseeding itself.
