Nettle, Bull

Bull nettle is a common, bristly perennial that thrives in damp, nutrient-rich soil. The plant is known for its unpleasant stinging hairs on the stems and lower leaf surfaces. Slender, square, straight stems grow 3-7 feet tall. Leaves are broadly to narrowly egg-shaped with a rounded or heart-shaped base and a pointed tip. Tiny, greenish-white flowers are arranged in clusters on slender, branched spikes. Bull nettle produces a small, dry, oval-shaped, 1-seeded yellow to grayish-tan fruit. It reproduces by wind-dispersed seeds and creeping rhizomes and grows in dense clumps, often forming large colonies. The stings from the Bull Nettle are similar to fireant stings in their duration and effect.
