Povertyweed

Long-lived perennial with vigorous creeping roots. Grows to about 2 feet tall. It is a native of Western North America and is also found in wet areas around salt marshes. When established, it is difficult to eradicate. Handling foliage may cause allergic reactions. Mature foliage exudes an unpleasant odor and is covered with short stiff hairs. Leaves opposite on lower stems and alternate near tips, 1-4 cm long, thick, leathery, dotted with red glands full of resin, and smooth margins. Roots are creeping, woody, and highly branched. Flowers from May through September. Flower heads greenish on short stalks with numerous buds.
