Ryegrass

Ryegrass

Rye-grass is an annual or perennial that grows from 1’ to 3’ tall. The plant is tufted and hairless with a bunch-type growth habit; tillering. The leaves are dark green, smooth and glossy on the lower surface. The edges are smooth with parallel veins. Rye-grass grows in bunches and spreads by stems, creating a thick carpet of green leaves. This grass is used in the southern United States as an overseed to turf grass and as forage for cattle. Perennial is more cold hardy than annual. In northern states and cooler zones perennial rye-grass serves as permanent turf. Rye-grass prefers rich, well-drained, moist soil, buy will grow almost anywhere. It is found throughout the United States.
