Scarlet Pimpernel

This plant is low-growing broad leaf annual that resembles chickweed but has showy reddish-orange flowers. The leaves are opposite, oval, and about 1” long with no petiole. They may have tiny hairs and occur in whorls of three. The lower leaf surfaces have dark purple spots. The stem is square, branches at the base and may reach 10” in length. The flowers are solitary and form in the axils (area between leaf and stem). Each flower has 5 petals that are red to orange. Flowers occur from June to August.
