Sumac

Sumac

Sumacs are shrubs or small trees that can grow from 3 to 30 ft. tall. The leaves are spirally arranged and are usually pinnate. They produce thick, bunchy spikes of flowers that are 2 to 12” long. The flowers can be greenish, red or creamy white and are very small. They later become clusters of reddish fruits that are referred to as sumac bobs. Sumacs propagate by seeds, rhizomes and new shoots. The seeds are spread by birds and other animals through their droppings. Some species contain an allergen urushiol which can cause allergic reaction. Poison sumac can be identified with its white drupes.
