Vervain, Blue

Vervain, Blue

Blue vervain is a slender, erect perennial that grows up to 5 feet tall. It grows in moist meadows, marshes, ponds, ditches, soggy thickets, pastures, and near rivers and ponds. Four-angled green or red stems branch occasionally in the upper half. Leaves are opposite, spear-shaped, and veined. Upper stems terminate in elegant flowering spikes crowded with small, unscented, reddish blue or violet flowers. Flowers bloom from mid-to late-summer. Each flower produces four reddish blown, oblong seeds. The root system is comprised of fibrous roots and short rhizomes.
