Vetch, Bird

Bird vetch is a perennial plant that is found in old fields and along roadsides. The weed climbs and clings to structures. It is recognized by its weak stems and coiling tendrils at the end of each leaf. Leaves have 8-10 pairs of narrow leaflets. Clusters of bluish-violet flowers supported by small stems grow on one-sided stalks. Bird vetch produces copious amounts of seed and rhizomes. Seeds from narrow, spear-shaped seed pods remain viable for many years.
