Vetch, Milk

Milk Vetch is a perennial species of plant that can be found in most areas of the United States. The leaves of the plant are alternate with leaflets coming off of them with 7-25 individual leaves. The leaves of the leaflets are generally elliptical in shape to tips that come to a sharp point. The plant produces seed pods similar to beans since it is in the bean family. The seeds are usually a half inch long, brown in color, and have pitted surfaces. The flowers generally are purplish-pink that has 5 petals, that when they dry turns to blue. The plant ranges in height from 8 to 10 inches tall, and has a thick, single deep taproot. Another common variety of Milk Vetch is the Hairy Milk Vetch that looks similar in size and shape, the only difference is the leaves of the leaflets of that plant are thickly coated in small hairs giving it a hairy appearance.
