Vetch

Vetch

Wild Vetch is a member of the pea family and is also known as American Purple Vetch. It can tolerate poor soils but grows aggressively in moist sites. Wild Vetch is found throughout the U.S. except for the Deep South. Leaves are pinnately compound and have 8-16 opposite leaflets. Older leaves develop tendrils which aid in climbing. Flowers are ¾ to 1 ¼ inches long and are commonly purple but might also be rose or white. The flat seed pod (legume) grows 1.5-3 inches long. Wild Vetch is most often found on roadsides and in pastures and can be a problem in ornamental beds. It is a summer annual and often loses its vigor in the heat of the summer.
