Witchgrass

Witchgrass

Witch grass is found throughout the U.S. normally in open fields or on disturbed soils. It is troublesome in landscape plantings and vegetable gardens. It is a summer annual that produces a large tuft of a seed head that could include half its total height (up to 32 inches). It flowers from June to September and is a prolific seeder. It can be identified by inspecting the leaves for tiny hairs that cover both sides. The leaf has a conspicuous white mid-vein. The roots are very fibrous and the plant competes well with desirable plants for water and nutrients. Witch grass is sometimes called Witches Hair, Tumble Weed Grass, or Tickle Weed.
