Wormseed

Wormseed

Wormseed is an annual weed that grows in disturbed soils and roadsides throughout the U.S. It is actually cultivated for its oil in other countries and more recently in Maryland. Wormseed has a multi-branched stem and can grow to 2-3 feet in height. The leaves are lance shaped and grow 1-3 inches long along the bottom of the plant while the upper leaves are much smaller. It flowers in July to September on closely crowded spikes mixed with the leaves. The flowers are green in color and are followed by a small round green fruit each containing one black seed. The entire plant has a strong, disagreeable odor due to the volatile oil which is present.
