Yarrow

Yarrow

Yarrow is a perennial weed that grows throughout the U.S. except for the Southwest. Yarrow is best identified by its leaf which is fern-like in appearance as it is divided multiple times into narrow segments. The leaves are strongly scented. The root system consists of extensive rhizomes and is very fibrous. White flower heads in flat clusters start in May and last through summer. It reproduces by seed and by rhizome. It can form dense patches in thin turf due to the spreading rhizomes. Mowing alone will not remove Yarrow although it is less vigorous if mowed short. Yarrow prefers poor, dry, sandy soils. Proper turf maintenance will encourage the turf to out compete the Yarrow.
